Historic Oakland, Oregon, located 20 miles north of Roseburg on Highway 99, provides a glimpse into Oregon's past. This tiny hamlet is Oregon's first historic district recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes over 130 properties. Oakland has one of Oregon's best groups of brick storefronts from the 1890s, and many of the buildings are labeled with their vintage and former use. In the downtown area there are also antique stores, curio shops, and art galleries to browse through. An Oakland history and walking tour pamphlet is available from the Oakland Chamber of Commerce at 117 3rd Street.

Places worth an individual visit include the Oakland Museum and Tolly's. The Oakland Museum features Oakland's history from 1851 to the present. Artifacts, photographs and much more are on display.  The muesum is open from 12:30 to 3:30 daily and closed holidays, with no admission for entry. Tolly's includes an old fashioned marble topped soda fountain and ice cream parlor, candy counter and antique gift shop as well as an elegant restaurant upstairs.

Oakland is in the Umpqua Valley, which is famous for its wineries. A tour of the valley's wineries takes a visitor along riverbanks, through rolling hills and green valleys where the vineyards are situated. There are blue information signs that direct visitors along a wine tasting tour from Umpqua to Winston. Some of the wineries on the tour are Henry Estate Winery, which produces wines such as pinot noir, white Riseling, and Müller-Thurgau; and La Garza Cellars, a winery which produces cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, Riesling and merlot. Many of the wineries on the tour have daily tours and free wine tasting available.

Known as one of Oregon's premier fly fishing streams, the North Fork of the Umpqua River is also one of Oregon's most scenic rivers. Located a few miles south of Oakland, it's one of the few rivers with a summer run of native steelhead. Visitors can fish on their own, or hire a guide service.

The North Fork is also a popular hiking area, and has one of the state's greatest concentrations of waterfalls. Many have short hikes leading to them. The half mile hike to see Toketee Fall's 120 foot plunge is well worth a stop.
