Sutherlin, Oregon is a hunting and fishing paradise. There are
seasons on deer, Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain Elk, black bear,
cougar, bob cat, grey and red fox, wild turkey, quail, pheasant,
mourning dove, Canadian geese, ducks, banded pigeon and many other
wild birds and animals. For fishermen, Sutherlin has two dams,
three creeks and the largest stocked log pond in Douglas County,
all within a 5 minute drive from the city center. Sutherlin is
also close to the excellent fly fishing of the Umpqua River. Since
over 80% of the county is timberland, almost anywhere you go takes
you to a park or a forest camp for family enjoyment.
Sutherlin's prime location in one of the many valleys between
the Cascade Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range allows
local wineries to produce prize winning, premium vintages. Tours
of the Henry Estate Winery west of Sutherlin, Abacela Vineyards
and Winery, and the Hill Crest Vinyard are available. Visitors
can contact the wineries for tour availability.
Experience the natural wonders of the area by taking the Rogue-Umpqua
Scenic Byway. The route starts just a few miles south of Sutherlin
on Highway 138 and follows the scenic North Umpqua River east
from Roseburg, then heads south to follow the wild Rogue River.
This 172 mile byway winds by beautiful natural areas, lush green
forest, waterfalls and picturesque Diamond Lake. There are many
places available for camping, hunting, fishing and hiking along
this scenic byway.
Cooper Creek Reservoir is an excellent recreation site located
in a valley adjoining Sutherlin. The facilities include bass and
trout fishing, boating, swimming facilities, two dock areas, water
skiing, jet skiing and many picnic areas. Ford Pond is two miles
to the west, where blue gill and crappie abound for family fishing
enjoyment. With many county parks, state parks, and the Crater
Lake National Park nearby, there are many opportunities for recreation
in Sutherlin.
