Albany, now an important manufacturing center for the rare metals, food processing, timber and seed industries, has never forgotten its Victorian days - its beginning as a thriving and prosperous river town. When Highway 99 and I-5 were constructed, Albany's older commercial and residential areas were bypassed, and now Albany is home to Oregon's largest group of past architectural styles, including every major style popular in the U.S. since 1850. The Monteith, Hackleman and Downtown Commercial Historic Districts have 350 historic homes. Visitors to Albany may tour many of the city's historic homes during the Summer Interiors Homes Tour, conducted annually on the last Saturday in July or during the Christmas Parlour Tour, held in December. Included are tours of museums, historic churches, homes, haywagon rides, refreshments and trolley rides. In July and August, the River Rhythms concert series features nationally known bands performing at Monteith Park. The Mondays at Monteith series highlights regional and local entertainers. Admission to both concert series are free. Hot air balloons are in the sky in August during Albany's Northwest Art and Air Festival. The balloons are launched at sunrise each morning, starting each day of fun at the festival. Visit Timber Linn Park to view an art show and sale, listen to live entertainment, or enjoy memorable food and drink. Finding treasures and collectibles while shopping, or enjoying
dinner at one of the many fine restaurants is a perfect way to
end a memorable day in historic Albany. |
