Previously called Eugene City, this city was named for Eugene Skinner, a settler that had a land claim at the foot of what is now known as Skinner's Butte. One of the many historic buildings in Eugene is Deady Hall, built in 1873. Deady Hall, named after Judge Matthew Deady, is the oldest building on the University of Oregon campus. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
