"All San Franciscans love to hate Fisherman's Wharf. Content never to visit the area, they complain of the tacky shops selling cheap souvenirs, the "novelty" museums whose novelty has long worn off and busloads of tourists blocking the view to Alcatraz. But secretly, everyone likes it a little, and having guests from out of town is the perfect excuse for otherwise cynical old-timers to "force" themselves to go..."

"Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island cannot only explore the remnants of the prison, but can also learn about the Indian occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications (the first U.S. fort on the coast), and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. These structures and the island's many natural features - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare - are being preserved by the National Park Service which is working to make it accessible to visitors, preserve its buildings, protect its birds and other wildlife, and interpret its history." As of this writing NPS has given boat access concession to Blue and Gold Fleet. Tip: Get your tickets before your visit to assure seating on the boat ride to Alcatraz.

Golden Gate Bridge
-
Except for foggy days, the Golden Gate Bridge presents itself for viewing from most waterfront areas of Fisherman's Wharf. There are plenty of ways to visit the bridge as well. Local shops provide everything from rental cars to bicycles. Also consider one of the bay cruises that will take you under the bridge for that once in a lifetime photo opportunity! If you take a drive over the bridge, know that it is a toll bridge so be ready with a fee. On the north side of the bridge is a popular parking and viewing area of both the bridge and the San Francisco city scape.

Exploratorium
-
"The museum of science, art and human perception." We consider this to be a must-see when visiting San Francisco, especially if you have children along. One could easily visit for several days if not a week and still enjoy the educational exhibits. Information and science is presented in very practical and understandable ways, and the Exploratorium is one of the largest science museums anywhere. Although a couple miles away from Fisherman's Wharf, there are public transportation means to easily travel there and back. Be sure to take your camera as the Exploratorium is housed in the Palace of Fine Arts and set in one of the most breathtaking settings of Roman colonnade and rotundas imaginable courtesy of the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915.
