Gold Beach, Oregon was formerly known as Ellensburg. The town name was changed to avoid confusion with Ellensburg, Washington, although the original name is retained in Gold Beach's main street name, Ellensburg Avenue. Named for the gold panned from the black placer sands on the beach, Gold Beach is located at the mouth of the wild and scenic Rogue River.
