Lodging in Portland

There are lodging choices in Portland to suit every budget and every need. Ranging from expensive to budget, Portland has a wide variety of lodging establishments. Major chains such as Marriott, Holiday Inn Express, Ramada Inns and others are well represented, although the highest density of choices tends to be clustered around downtown, the airport, and the Lloyd district. Bed and breakfasts and independents are more prevalent in the suburbs and outlying areas. Although Portland (and Oregon) has no sales tax, there is a lodging tax that will add approximately 10% to the cost.

The Benson Hotel (309 SW Broadway, www.bensonhotel.com), is one of Portland's finest luxury hotels. The circa 1913 establishment features spectacular public areas with massive chandeliers, carved walnut panels, and a wonderful lobby with places to linger with a book, or people watch. The rates are on the high end of the scale, as is typical of most of the stately renovated downtown hotels. Parking is extra, which is also standard for downtown lodging.

Marriot Springhill Suites - Portland Airport (11922 NE Airport Way, www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/pdxsh-springhill-suites-portland-airport/) has the business traveler in mind, with spacious suites, free, high speed internet access, in room coffee service, buffet breakfast with waffle bar, several restaurants within walking distance, free transportation to the airport, and many more amenities.

Built in 1915, McMenamins Kennedy School (5736 N.E. 33rd Ave.) is a place to experience. The McMenamin brothers (of Portland brewery fame) converted an historic elementary school into a delightful bed and breakfast. Located in a northeast Portland neighborhood, the Kennedy School is known for its original artwork, murals and historic photographs. Guest rooms are converted classrooms, complete with standard classroom equipment, including chalkboards and cloakrooms. The school also includes a brewery, a movie theater, excellent restaurants, a gymnasium, a library, a soaking pool, and two bars (you may get sent to the Detention Bar). The McMenamin brothers have many other comfortable, imaginative establishments in Portland and throughout Oregon - choose any of them - they're all fun!
