The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is located nine miles north of Mitchell. The unit has four different hiking trails that allow you to see the beautiful colors in the layers of claystone, as well as experience the panoramic views of the Painted Hills and Sutton Mountain.
